During my shadowing placement, I observed doctors and nurses in the ophthalmology department during patient consultations, diagnostic tests, and minor eye procedures. I learned about common eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and gained insight into how they are identified, monitored, and treated. I also observed the use of specialist equipment and learned about the importance of precision and attention to detail in clinical practice. This experience gave me a clear understanding of how healthcare professionals from different disciplines collaborate to deliver safe and effective patient care. It strengthened my communication, observation, and teamwork skills, while also improving my confidence in a professional environment. I developed a deeper appreciation for the importance of empathy, confidentiality, and professionalism in patient interactions, and gained valuable insight into the daily routines and challenges of hospital life.
