YiMiao Shih (b. 1985) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist, and is an associate lecturer of MA Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art and lecturer of MA Illustration and Visual Media at London College of Communication, UAL. She has a BFA in Fine Art from National Taiwan Normal University, and a MA in Visual Communication from Royal College of Art. She investigates the definitions of drawing and illustration through diverse media including textiles, led by working innovatively with embroidery machines and hand stitching, to create contemporary ‘embroidery-drawing’. She also makes art with acrylic paints, mixed media and pencils. Her work often satirises contemporary culture and politics, as well as capturing the everyday mundane moments in life. She held her first solo show Rabbrexit Means Rabbrexit in London at the House of Illustration gallery in 2019 and has participated in group shows at Royal Academy of Arts, Saatchi Gallery, London Transport Museum, Seventeen Gallery and Mall Galleries. YiMiao is open to be commissioned on projects and personalised collaboration, and can provide her artistry vision and practice in artistic, commercial and editorial realm.
Shih participated in a group show 'Future Island' in Start Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery in 2016. Her latest embroidery artwork 'RABBEXIT (An Homage to Brexit)' was selected by Grayson Perry RA to be featured in the 250th Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, under the theme 'art made now'. She commenced her 6-month residency at the House of Illustration in September 2018. Shih’s residency has culminated in a 3-month solo exhibition in March 2019, entitled 'YiMiao Shih: Rabbrexit Means Rabbrexit'. A publication for the exhibition as a result of collaboration with Stephanie Polsky is to be launched on 30 October 2019. The publication is the first edition of platform TDWM established by Cecilia Wee and Jon Hawken.
