Job Overview
Reporting to the CFO, the Interim Financial Controller will lead a focused clean-up of the group’s balance sheets ahead of year end. The objective is clear: all balance sheet accounts across the UK, FR, US and SG entities cleared, cleaned and reconciled by 31 December 2026, with every balance fully analysed and supported by the end of January 2027.
Alongside this, you will oversee day-to-day accounting and group reporting, support the completion of the ongoing FY2025 audit, own the accuracy of the margin analysis, and make sure postings are accurate and financial information is delivered on time.
This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced technical finance leader who can maintain robust financial control, streamline processes and provide trusted financial insight to the executive team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ongoing FY2025 audit support
- Support the completion of the ongoing FY2025 audit across the UK, FR and US entities, acting as a point of contact for the auditors alongside the CFO.
- Oversee and support the accountants in responding to audit requests, making sure information, reconciliations and supporting documents are accurate, complete and delivered on time.
- Track open audit queries and outstanding items, follow up on them, and help resolve audit findings and proposed adjustments.
- Make sure FY2025 audit adjustments are posted correctly and reflected in opening balances for 2026.
2. Balance sheet clean-up (priority, by 31 December 2026)
- Reconcile every balance sheet account across all entities to supporting documentation, sub-ledgers, bank statements and third-party confirmations.
- Investigate and clear unreconciled differences, aged items, suspense and clearing accounts. Prepare proposed adjustments, reclassifications and write-offs, with supporting evidence, for CFO approval.
- Review the accuracy of historical postings: correct miscoding, duplicate entries and misallocations, and make sure transactions sit in the correct account, entity, period and currency.
- Reconcile intercompany balances across all entities, resolve mismatches (including FX differences) and agree positions so they eliminate cleanly on consolidation.
- Keep a balance sheet tracker showing reconciliation status, open items, owners and target dates, and report progress to the CFO every week.
3. Year-end close and analysis (January 2027)
- Deliver a full year-end balance sheet analysis, with a reconciliation file, supporting schedules and a clear explanation for every balance.
- Prepare audit-ready working papers and set up the FY2026 audit so that requests can be answered quickly and in full.
- Set out a standard month-end reconciliation process so the balance sheet stays clean after year end.
4. Margin analysis and performance
- Ensure the margin analysis by country and product category is accurate and complete. Validate revenue, cost of sales, freight, duties and stock adjustments against the GL.
- Reconcile the margin analysis to the management accounts each month.
- Analyse and explain variances against target margin, identifying the drivers (pricing, discounting, supplier costs, FX, logistics, product mix).
- Report findings and recommended corrective actions to the CFO and MD.
5. Ongoing financial control and reporting
- Oversee daily financial operations and month-end close across the UK, FR, US and SG, including reviewing reconciliations prepared by the accountants.
- Produce accurate monthly group management accounts, including multi-currency consolidation, intercompany eliminations and variance analysis.
- Maintain strong financial controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards, VAT/sales tax and local regulatory requirements.
- Own the general ledger and accounting policies, so that financial data stays accurate, consistent and intact.
6. Systems and business support
- Support the CFO on Business Central projects, including chart of accounts clean-up, master data updates and process improvements that prevent posting errors.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Financial Controller or Senior Finance Manager, preferably in a high-growth e-commerce or luxury retail environment.
- Proven track record of balance sheet clean-up / remediation projects.
- Strong technical accounting background with experience in group consolidation and multi-currency reporting.
- Strong understanding of stock, margin analysis, VAT, sales tax, FX and cross-border compliance.
- Knowledge of financial regulations and compliance, particularly in the UK, US and France.
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented and capable of operating autonomously to tight deadlines.
- Strong team leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work with international teams and senior stakeholders.
- ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified (or equivalent).
