Making sure your goals are SMART

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about the concept of goal-setting on our social media channels. If you work in fashion and luxury, you’re probably used to talking through targets for the different quarters and seasons in the year. These targets help us to move forward with purpose and intention, as well as chart our progress year on year. It’s no different in our own consultancy businesses – they can spur us on to aim higher and achieve more.

Professors Edwin Locke and Gary Latham are experts on goal-setting theory. Their 2002 study revealed that:

  • Setting challenging goals consistently leads to higher performance
  • Tight deadlines lead to a more rapid work pace
  • Sharing goals with others enhances personal commitment

Essentially, your consultancy business will progress more quickly when you set specific goals with set deadlines. In our previous post, we talked about how to set those all-important goals for yourself

Once you’ve sense-checked your goals, you’ll need to ensure they’re achievable by making sure they’re SMART. So, why not take a moment to ask yourself the below questions and make the most of the next quarter in your business?

Specific

Can you effectively plan to reach your goal? The narrower it is, the easier it will be to work towards it.

Measurable

Have you defined your metrics? Once you’ve defined them, you’ll be able to chart your progress along the way to make sure you’re still on target.

Attainable

Can you realistically achieve this goal within a certain timeframe? Or are you being too ambitious and setting yourself up for disappointment.

Relevant

Does this goal align with your individual values and long-term objectives? If not, it might be worth rethinking it.

Time-bound

Put those end dates in the diary and work backwards with a 30, 60 and 90 day plan. This will help you to pick up the pace and motivate yourself to work towards it.

As we mentioned earlier on in this post, sharing your goals can give you the accountability you need to stay on track. So, why not find an accountability partner in our Slack community? We have a growing community of consultants that are on the same professional journey, ready to connect with you and provide peer-to-peer support. Sign into your Dweet account to get started.
